Smart Serve Proctored Test: Setup Checklist and What Gets You Flagged
The Smart Serve Final Test is taken online under webcam proctoring. Knowing the knowledge is only half the job: a flagged session can cost you an attempt even if your score was high enough to pass.
By SmartServe Prep Team
Smart Serve Ontario states on its course pages that all Final Tests are proctored, with no exceptions, and that they are completed online with webcam ID verification and screen monitoring. That applies to the Full Course and to the Retail Course, and to people recertifying. If you have only ever written paper tests, the format can feel strict. This guide walks through what Smart Serve itself says you need, what ends an attempt, and how to set up so nothing outside your control gets in the way.
We are an independent practice site, not Smart Serve Ontario. Everything below is drawn from Smart Serve's own course pages (linked in the Sources section). Requirements can change, so check your Smart Serve account and email for the most current instructions before you start.
The Final Test at a Glance
| Detail | Full Course | Retail Course |
|---|---|---|
| Course fee (CAD, non-refundable) | $44.95 | $24.95 |
| Approximate course time | About 4 hours | About 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Final Test questions | 33 multiple choice, randomly generated | 20 multiple choice, randomly generated |
| Passing score | 80% | 80% |
| Attempts per purchase | 2 | 2 |
| Access window | 30 days from purchase | 30 days from purchase |
One wording note: Smart Serve's pages say both "a minimum of 80%" and, in the Final Test tips, "greater than 80%". Do not plan to scrape by at the line. On a 33-question test, each question is worth about 3 percentage points, so 27 correct answers is roughly 81.8% while 26 correct is roughly 78.8%. Aim to be comfortably above the threshold in practice before you book your attempt. Our mock exam uses an 80% pass mark so you can measure that gap.
What Smart Serve Says You Need
These are the requirements listed on Smart Serve's Full Course and Retail Course pages:
- A valid government-issued photo ID. Smart Serve says it is required to access your Final Test. Check the expiry date on your card now, not on test day.
- A working web camera and microphone. Smart Serve specifically tells you to check your browser settings to make sure they are not blocked.
- A reliable internet connection. Because you cannot pause, a dropped connection mid-test is a real risk.
- Browser pop-ups turned on. The test environment relies on them.
- A desktop or laptop is recommended, and Internet Explorer is not a supported browser.
- A comfortable environment with no distractions. No one can assist you during the test, and you cannot communicate with others.
What Costs You an Attempt
Smart Serve is direct about this. Once you start the Final Test you must complete it in one sitting, which it estimates at about 30 minutes. Its pages state that you cannot stop or leave the camera view, and that exiting the test or leaving the camera view forfeits that attempt. If the proctor flags a violation, you lose your attempt, even if you passed. Your session is reviewed for an integrity check before your certificate is released.
In practical terms, the situations that put an attempt at risk are:
- Stepping out of frame. Answering the door, grabbing a charger or stretching away from the desk all take you out of the camera view.
- Someone else entering the picture. A roommate walking behind you or a family member asking a question looks like assistance or communication, which Smart Serve prohibits.
- Communicating with anyone. Talking, texting or messaging during the session conflicts with the rule that you cannot communicate with others.
- Closing or leaving the test. Exiting counts as using up the attempt; there is no pause button.
- Technical failure you could have caught. A blocked camera or microphone, pop-ups disabled, or a weak connection can stop you from starting or finishing cleanly.
Smart Serve also reserves the right to review all tests, and tells candidates to check their email for information about their session. If something does go wrong, read that email carefully and contact Smart Serve through the channels it lists rather than starting a new attempt straight away.
The Night-Before Setup Checklist
Most problems with proctored tests are preventable. Run through this list the evening before you plan to write:
1. ID on the desk
Put your government-issued photo ID next to your computer. Confirm it has not expired and that the photo and name are clearly readable.
2. Camera and microphone allowed in the browser
Open your browser's site permissions and make sure the camera and microphone are not blocked. Close video-call apps that might be holding the camera.
3. Pop-ups enabled, supported browser
Use a current browser on a desktop or laptop (not Internet Explorer) and allow pop-ups for the Smart Serve site.
4. Power and connection
Plug in your laptop. If your Wi-Fi is unreliable, sit closer to the router or use a wired connection. Pause large downloads and system updates.
5. A quiet room you control
Pick a time when no one will walk in. Tell the people you live with that you need about 30 uninterrupted minutes. Face a wall rather than a doorway, and make sure your face is well lit so the camera can see you clearly.
6. Clear desk, silenced phone
Since you cannot communicate with anyone and your screen is monitored, keep only what you need in front of you. Silence your phone and put it out of reach.
7. Check your deadline
Course and Final Test access expire 30 days after purchase. Note the date so you are not forced to test on a bad day.
On Test Day
- Use the bathroom and get water before you launch the test, not during it.
- Read each question fully. Smart Serve questions are randomly generated, so you will not see the same set twice.
- Watch for qualifiers like "first", "best" or "most appropriate". Many scenario questions have two plausible answers and one that matches the safest legal response.
- Stay centred in the frame and keep your eyes on the screen.
- When you finish, check your email. Your certificate is released after the integrity check.
Study Before You Spend an Attempt
You get two attempts per purchase, so treat practice as the place to make mistakes. The topics that cause the most trouble are legal rules with exact numbers (hours, ages, ID) and scenario judgement (when to refuse service). These pages help:
- Ontario Liquor Laws practice questions
- ID Verification practice questions
- Signs of Intoxication practice questions
- Ontario alcohol service hours, with worked scenarios
- SmartServe test format and retake overview
