How this mock exam works

Each run pulls 35 questions at random from 551 and gives you 45 minutes. You need 80% to pass — that is 28 of 35 correct, and it is deliberately set to match the official standard. An 80% bar is unforgiving: you can only afford 7 wrong answers.

Because the draw is random, no two attempts are alike, and repeating the exam will walk you through most of the bank without letting you memorise an answer order. That matters more here than on most certification tests, because Smart Serve questions tend to be scenario-based — you are asked what you would do when a guest is showing three signs of intoxication, not to recite a definition.

What the exam covers

The bank is split across the areas below. Workplace safety, cannabis awareness and retail and delivery are the three largest in this site's question bank, which can surprise anyone who assumes Smart Serve is only about pouring drinks. We weight those areas heavily because Ontario's rules now reach well beyond the bar: cannabis became legal in 2018, alcohol is sold in grocery and convenience stores, and licensed delivery is a regulated activity. These counts describe our bank, not the official test, which Smart Serve does not break down by topic.

TopicQuestionsWhat it tests
⚖️ Ontario Liquor Laws 53 LLCA 2019, AGCO regulations, licensing requirements
🔍 Signs of Intoxication 51 Behavioral, physical, and speech indicators of intoxication
🛑 Refusal Techniques 41 CARE model, de-escalation, and safe refusal strategies
🪪 ID Verification 41 Valid ID types, checking procedures, and age verification
⚠️ Liability & Consequences 39 Personal fines, charges, and establishment penalties
🍺 Standard Drinks 42 Standard drink sizes, alcohol content, and serving measures
📋 Service Guidelines 44 Hours of service, house policies, incident documentation
🛡️ Workplace Safety & Emergency 85 Security protocols, emergency exits, overdose response, fire safety
🌿 Cannabis & Drug Awareness 80 Cannabis co-consumption, impaired by drugs vs alcohol, legalization rules
🏪 Retail Sales & Delivery 75 Smart Serve Retail, convenience stores, delivery driver responsibilities

Why the pass mark is 80%, and what that means for you

Smart Serve states that you need a minimum of 80% to pass the Final Test (smartserve.ca/full-course). Smart Serve does not publish its reasons for that number, but a high bar fits the stakes, because the consequences of getting it wrong are not academic. Under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019, serving someone to intoxication or serving a minor exposes both you personally and your employer to enforcement by the AGCO, and Ontario also recognises third-party liability — meaning a person harmed by an over-served guest can pursue the establishment that served them.

Practically, an 80% bar means you cannot afford to be vague on the topics you find boring. A common trap in our question bank is standard-drink equivalences and the specifics of what counts as valid identification: the wrong answers look plausible, but both topics are pure recall and entirely learnable, so they are where focused revision pays off fastest.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the real Smart Serve test?

Smart Serve's official Full Course Final Test has 33 randomly generated multiple-choice questions, taken online with proctoring in one sitting of about 30 minutes, with an 80% pass mark and two attempts per purchase (source: smartserve.ca/full-course/). Smart Serve delivers its assessment at the end of the online course rather than as a separate sit-down exam, and you need 80% to pass. Our mock exam mirrors that standard with 35 questions in 45 minutes at an 80% pass mark, drawn at random from 551 questions.

What does Smart Serve certification cost?

The Smart Serve full online course is $44.95 CAD (the AGCO lists it at $44.95 with no HST added), and holders of a valid certificate can recertify for $29.95 before it expires (smartserve.ca/recertification). Check smartserve.ca for the current retest policy. This practice site is free and independent — you still need to buy and pass the official course to be certified.

How long is a Smart Serve certificate valid?

Certification does not last indefinitely and Smart Serve has moved to a recertification model. Check your certificate expiry in your Smart Serve account, and plan to recertify before it lapses rather than after — an expired certificate means you cannot legally serve. The AGCO requires certificates from approved training programs to be renewed every five years.

Who legally needs Smart Serve in Ontario?

Anyone who sells, serves or handles alcohol in a licensed establishment in Ontario, along with anyone who checks ID at the door and anyone who delivers alcohol. That covers servers, bartenders, managers, security staff, retail sales staff and delivery drivers. The requirement flows from the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019 and is enforced by the AGCO. Strictly, the AGCO requires a certificate from a Board-approved training program: Smart Serve is approved for every licensee and employee, while staff in licensed grocery, convenience and winery retail stores can instead hold Smart Serve Retail or another approved retail program, and delivery licence holders can use an approved delivery program (agco.ca, responsible liquor sale, service and delivery training).

Can I fail the Smart Serve test?

Yes. The Final Test requires a minimum of 80% to pass and each course purchase includes two attempts (source: smartserve.ca/full-course/), so check the official retest policy on smartserve.ca before you sit it. Smart Serve does not publish pass or fail statistics. Our study advice, based on this site's question bank: the legal-liability and standard-drink sections are the two areas where a common-sense guess is most often wrong, because they reward actual study — exact drink sizes, who can be held liable and when — rather than instinct.

Is this practice test the official Smart Serve exam?

No. This is an independent study aid. We do not reproduce official Smart Serve questions — those are confidential. Our questions are written from the publicly available law and regulator guidance the course is built on, so they test the same knowledge in the same format.
